On January 10, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint against General Motors regarding consumer privacy violations through GM’s OnStar application. The FTC complaint alleges the OnStar application collected precise geolocation data from vehicles equipped with Gen 10+ OnStar modules every three seconds and transmitted it to third parties without adequate disclosure.

Additionally, the OnStar application shared detailed driving behavior data, including hard braking and speed, with third parties like Verisk, impacting insurance rates.

THE CLAIM

This claim alleges that General Motors, through the use of tracking tools in the OnStar application, gave third parties personal data about its users including geolocation date and driving behavior, according to the FTC’s complaint.

ARBITRATION

Unlike a class action, in arbitration your claim is your own. Consumers who pursue arbitration have more control over the outcome of their claim than consumers who join class actions involving similar claims.
